A pebble’s throw from the Promenade des Anglais and Nice’s old town, the Bay Café is a welcome stop after a shopping frenzy on rue Jean Medecin or glitzy avenue de Verdun. Opposite Place Massena’s fountain, the terrace of this bright and breezy café-brasserie bustles with animated conversation from its eclectic clientele – girlfriends catching up, older couples discussing the family, handsome young men planning a night out - whatever the time of day. Inside, the décor is ‘upmarket, latterday Fifties’ ice-cream parlour’: dark-wood chairs upholstered in pastelly orange leather, high stools around higher circular tables, cream walls. Lunch is always a good option, particularly the copious salads, including cubes of chicken and potato served on a bed of green leaves strewn with slices of tomato. For the ravenous, a traditional burger (freshly made), cooked to your liking, with fries (dry) will hit the spot. The black-clad staff could smile a little more but the business-lunchers don’t seem to mind. Nor the fact that the air-conditioning isn’t working. Come back in the evening to sip a kir or two to some mellow sounds as the sun goes down – just watch out for the passing (new, high-tech) trams if you’ve had one too many …..
