Les Corsaires, Villefranche-sur-Mer
Tucked between Nice and the desirable Cap Ferrat peninsula, there are many reasons to come to Villefranche-sur-Mer: to visit the Chapelle de Saint Pierre, with its ghostly decoration by Jean Cocteau; to walk around the covered, medieval streets of the old town; to laze on the intimate, public sandy beaches and, of course, to eat good food in one of the restaurants that line the harbour. At the head of the line, literally, is the newly opened Les Corsaires. A short walk from the Cocteau-frequented Hotel Welcome, this ‘non-stop’ café-bar-restaurant is indeed a welcome addition to the traditional establishments that abound. Coffee or lunch is best enjoyed on the terrace as you sit on a pale-wood director’s chair, sunglasses on. Instead of the usual fish or lamb, there’s a varied tapas menu of old favourites with a twist such as minty meatballs, squid rings, deep-fried mozzarella balls …. But it’s the pasta dishes that are to die for: tagliatelle, cream and bacon has never tasted so good and the quantity could easily serve two people. In the evening, head up the grey slate stairs to the bar, where you can slouch on red leather Fifties-style sofas as you sip a local rose and watch the lights twinkling across the bay. Just hope there’s not a cruise ship in so that you can actually get a seat! The staff here are some of the friendliest you’ll encounter.
