L’Auberge Provencale, Antibes
You’ll find plenty of flashy restaurants in yacht-magnet Antibes with their ‘valet parking’ signs and asian-fusion menus but for good, regional cooking look no further than L’Auberge Provencale. In the heart of the old town, on a typical southern-French square dotted with plane trees, the unremarkable yellow façade hides a delightful shady courtyard where meals are served in fine weather. On colder days, there’s a cosy interior dining room with warm, terracotta floor tiles and a ‘winter garden’ where light streams in from a glass roof. The lunch menu is a steal at 14.50 euros for two courses – lamb fillets that melt in the mouth (the other choice is fish) and pesto-fried gnocchi, which are light in the stomach. Dessert is either a gooey chocolate brownie or two scoops of ice-cream or sorbet sprinkled with raspberries. Service, efficient but unrushed, comes with a smile. Fellow guests sitting around the smart, white tablecloths tend to be older – businessmen, tourists, several generations of one family. The presence of a well-known local Michelin-starred chef at the next table during my last visit confirmed that this is one of the best restaurants in town. There are six traditionally decorated rooms if you want to stay over.
