La Table du Cap, Cap Ferrat
There are few things more pleasurable in life than a good meal with a great view, and, provided you bring good company, La Table du Cap is as good as it gets. In the heart of the village of St Jean on Cap Ferrat, ‘the peninsula of dreams’, home to celebrities and billionaires, thirtysomething chef Laurent Poulet has been cooking up a storm since July 2007. The lunch menu is good value at 25 euros where the starter (green salad), main course (daube de boeuf/provencal beef stew with roast potatoes or fish) and dessert (apple crumble) are served on one plate (in separate dishes!). Satisfying all but those with the biggest appetites, the flavours were great but my meat was a little tough. Pleasingly, the price also includes two glasses of wine and a coffee. The décor is not luxurious in this restaurant - art gallery dotted with sculptures – a life-size silver model of a male bulldog let’s you know you’ve arrived - but the staff is friendly and attentive. Sitting on the terrace on the last Saturday in May, watching the boats dance on the sparkly water in the harbour, we can’t help but wonder where the rest of the clients are: the other, cheaper, restaurants on the street have plenty of activity. Well worth a visit – but make it quick. Unless the owners sort out their marketing it won’t be there for long. For the culinary minded, the chef also offers private cookery lessons.
