Best places to visit in Greenland
You’ll probably fly into Kangerlussuaq – but best to use it only as a stopover. If you have time though, take a safari to see some of the 3,500 musk oxen that live in the region - you may also see arctic foxes, polar hares, reindeer, gerfalcons and other birds. It's worth visiting the glacier too, then move on to Illusissat.
Ilulissat means 'the icebergs', and if you visit one place in Greenland, this should be it. The hundreds of icebergs clogging the fjord on their way out to Alaska and Canada are its main attraction - some of them are more than one hundred metres high and more than 30,000 years old. They originate from Greenland's second-fastest producing glacier - it produces 20 million tons of ice every 24 hours, which is as much water as New York City consumes in one year! The town itself is also ridiculously picturesque with clusters of colourful houses dotted across the cliffs overlooking the bay, sled dogs (there are around 6000 in the town -that's a lot of dogs!) lounging on the shore and old-fashioned fishing boats cruising the harbour. In summer there's nothing lovelier than sitting by the fjord in the glow of the midnight sun, watching the ice.
Asiaat is well-worth a visit for a glimpse of true Greenlandic life. A sleepy little town on the southern part of Disko Bay, it's rarely visited by tourists and thus retains an old-fashioned charm. The archipelago of islands surrounding it are outstandingly beautiful, perfect for kayaking and other boating, and there are some pretty places to camp. Enjoy the peace and quiet, go whale watching, soak up the culture. In the centre of town is a meeting place where they lay out the day’s catch – which can be anything from cod to a whole whale. Avoid unless you have a strong stomach!
