The Cavendish
This is one of my favourite hideaway hotels in central London. Forget the glitzy, ritzy 5 star joints around town – this 4 star boutique-style hotel on 15 floors offers a quiet location just off Piccadilly - artistic décor, seriously attentive staff, superior/ executive rooms and Penthouse suites (with great cityscape views across to the London Eye), lively lobby bar, clubby lounge and fabulous restaurant. Historically from 1664, Jermyn Street’s shops dressed the aristocracy at The Court of St James’s with bespoke shirt makers, tailors, boot makers, hatters: everything for the elegant gentleman. That tradition continues today with such famous names as Thomas Pink, Alfred Dunhill, Charles Tyrwhitt, Churches and speciality shops from jewellery to cigars. A couple of Arcades are lined with boutiques leading up to Piccadilly, from where it’s a short walk to Bond Street. Opposite the hotel is Fortnum and Mason – visit for afternoon tea and a browse around the exquisite palace of a food hall.
The Cavendish caters equally for the leisure and business guest, with its a homely atmosphere and a touch of quiet sophistication. While the lobby bar may be buzzing day and night with shoppers and office workers, hotel residents can venture upstairs to the stylish lounge bar for a relaxing coffee or cocktail and the cool and classy Restaurant – an oasis of calm and almost exclusive to hotel guests. Gourmet buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner are served – smart, contemporary British food with good value menus. Service from reception, concierge to wining and dining is spot on. On my first stay here, returning from the theatre a late night snack was just what was required. No problem. Sandwiches made to order and pot of tea were promptly served in the lounge. Planning another visit to London this summer for a wedding, I immediately booked the Cavendish again. It’s my home from home in the Capital.
