Hell Bay Hotel
If you yearn for a tropical island holiday but can’t face the long-haul flight with baby, the Scilly Isles is a true find and Hell Bay a slice of heaven for new mums and dads in search of baby-friendly style. Visitors arrive by boat from St Mary’s to the tiny island of Bryher. The hotel’s Land Rover scoops everyone up from the wooden pier set over the white sand beach and turquoise sea.
You may be just 28 miles from the Cornish mainland, yet you could be in the Caribbean, thanks to a benevolent Gulf Stream – and without the five-hour time difference to mess up baby’s sleeping patterns. Hell Bay Hotel is owned by Robert and Lucy Dorrien-Smith, who also lease the neighbouring island of Tresco from the Duchy of Cornwall.
There’s a ‘New England meets Cornwall’ feel to the hotel. Rooms and suites are scattered across mini-houses, so there’s a chic village atmosphere, enhanced by the most amazing flora and fauna. Upon arrival with baby, parents are immediately asked what little one would like for tea. There’s a cute cot with delightful gifts waiting in the room, with its Lloyd Loom and Malabar fabrics set against cool ocean blues and greens. There are high chairs in the restaurant and it doesn’t seem to matter a jot that baby might be within easy reach of a priceless Barbara Hepworth sculpture or local artist Richard Pearce’s paintings.
