Pasticceria Savia, Catania
  Pasticceria Savia

Sicilians have told me if they're not eating, or thinking about what they've just eaten or about to eat, then they're probably asleep and dreaming of eating; the result of this passion is you'll find some of the best food in the world here.

Catania is no exception when it comes to good food, there's a plethora of restaurants and cafés, but the café the locals will take you to is Pasticceria Savia that has been run as a family business since 1897 and is just opposite the city’s Giardino Bellini botanical gardens on the bustling Via Etnea. Savia makes Catania’s best ice creams, granita sorbets, cannoli (ricotta stuffed pastries), torta alle mandorle (almond cakes), frutta martorana (marzipan fruits), cassata (ricotta cake), and paste di mandorla (almond biscuits) — all typical Sicilian recipes made from local products. Savia isn’t just a patisserie; upstairs you can dine on Sicilian savouries such as arancini (fried rice balls containing a ragu sauce).
