Islands to visit
Aitutaki
Probably the most idyllic of the inhabited islands – if you’re not too busy snorkeling, diving or deep sea fishing, you’ll be lazing on the beach or enjoying the view from your balcony. Make sure you try the local food too – it’s healthy, abundant and seems to contain an inordinate amount of papaya! Read more here.
Atiu
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself feeling like Robinson Crusoe on this tiny jungle island – there are only 500 inhabitants and you’ll have a real sense of an untouched South Pacific community. Explore the stunning Anatakitaki Caves (call Marshall Humphreys on +682 33041), visit the local coffee grower and attend a tumunu – the local drinking club!
Raratonga
This lush, mountainous island is the capital of the archipelago and one of the major tourist destinations. You’ll find the usual fantastic beaches, calm warm waters, plus lots of watersports – windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving, deep sea fishing and, obviously, lots and lots of sunbathing…
