Tipping
Tipping isn’t expected and is contrary to Cook Island’s custom. However if you receive excellent service and want to acknowledge it, tips are always welcome.
Top tips
- Wear lots of suncream – you’ll still get burnt when the sky is hazy, particularly if you’re out to sea. As the locals will remind you, ‘there’s no ozone layer’ in this part of the world, so the sun is much stronger.
- Start loving papaya – it’s the island’s favourite food and it’s everywhere; in smoothies, in salads, in stews..
- Wear mosquito repellent in the evening, particularly if you are inland or near jungle
- Take care if you swim near coral – it can graze the skin and result in a painful cut
