Fife Seafood Restaurant
I'm reminded of the old gag about being on a seafood diet - when I see food I eat it - and you very definitely will find the food hard to resist at this award winning St Andrews restaurant. Opened five years ago, it’s just a stone's throw from the Royal & Ancient's clubhouse that sits at the back of the 18th green on the famous Old Course. Getting a reservation in this restaurant would be virtually impossible during any major golf tournament and it's probably very difficult on most weekends of the year unless you call them well in advance. It won the Restaurant of the Year award at the Catering in Scotland Awards ceremony in 2007 and it's easy to see why.
Starting with the location that overlooks the beach, it's glass walls make you feel like you are floating above the ocean. We went for lunch on a Monday and it was nicely busy; we were made to feel welcome from the minute we walked through the door. An air conditioning vent that was pumping out slightly too cold air for some of our party was quickly dealt with. The menu was very imaginative, I had red snapper on a bed of rissotto that included tomatoes - it was superb. I’d started with a chicken terrine that was also delicious. All the deserts were beautifully presented and those that had the chocolate fondue were ecstatic. I’m told the cheese plate is about the only disappointing thing on the menu. The Table d'Hote three course lunch was £26, excluding wine' the dinner three course menu is £46.
