Hotel Villa Augustus
Stepping into the Hotel Villa Augustus there’s an immediate feeling that you’re in someone’s house. The large reception area is almost like a family drawing room with its comfy seats, plump cushions, basket-weave chairs, sweeping drapes, potted plants and scattered rugs — this has a homey feel. So when you learn that this was a country villa converted into a hotel in 1950, it comes a no surprise, and the friendly staff have managed to create a feeling of intimacy and informality conducive to relaxation.
A family-run business, this three-star hotel sits on a narrow street just 100 yards or so from the sea in Lipari’s main town with easy access to the island’s many beaches, restaurants, cafés, bars and shops as well as the archaeological museum. The accommodation is in whitewashed, air-conditioned bungalows that surround an elegant garden packed with pink oleander, palm trees and graceful ferns, providing a small oasis at centre of the villa. A small roof terrace provides views out to the harbour. Open from March to October, the Hotel Villa Augustus is a good choice as a base to explore Lipari and the nearby volcanic islands and turquoise seas of the Aeolian Islands.
