Sun Studios Memphis

Sun Studios in Memphis proudly boasts of being the birthplace of rock and roll and would you be prepared to argue with them? It's where Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins all got started in their recording careers. Originally owned by the late Sam Phillips he established his Memphis Recording Studios in January 1950 to record “anything, anytime, anywhere”.Sam’s first hit was Jackie Brenston’s ‘Rocket 88’ in 1951. It was on 5 July 1954 Elvis Presley first stepped up to the microphone and sang a Bing Crosby hit from 1950 called ‘Harbor Lights.’ Sometime after midnight he cut ‘That’s All Right’ – the record that started it all.

When you walk in through the door you really do feel like you’re stepping back in time. In the little lobby/waiting area are old pieces of recording equipment, but the biggest surprise of all is when you walk into the studio itself; it’s so small and around the walls are pictures of Elvis and the other great Sun artists. When U2 recorded there Bono walked in through the door, fell to his knees, and kissed the floor. That’s how important this place is. There’s a guy on hand who conducts the tour…although the tour is all in this one room. The clever use of music and recorded snippets makes this a must if you’re a music fan or just someone who loves a little cultural history.
