Terraliva
According to myth some angels came down from heaven to find the best olive oil to take back to paradise, and they found it at Terraliva. Luckily for the rest of us, Terraliva is now an agriturismo, which means it is mix of a hotel and restaurant set on a working farm. The advantage of staying at an agriturismo rather than a hotel is that you’re likely to sample wonderful food made fresh from the farm’s own produce and stay in an old building in the countryside owned by a family, so you’ll really get a feel for life in the Sicilian countryside.
Terraliva ticks all of these boxes. A working farm, it opened as an agriturismo in 2008, and is run by a husband-and-wife team. Situated in south-eastern Sicily in the Monti Iblei (Hyblaean Mountains). It nestles among limestone hills, olive groves and vineyards, and if you have a car is a tranquil place to use as a base to visit the surrounding ancient ruins and Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, the numerous beaches on the lengthy coastline, and Mount Etna.
A large building built from local tufa stone and volcanic rock houses seven bedrooms that have been renovated with especial care to detail and authenticity, with antique wooden furniture, including carved beheads inlaid with tortoiseshell. But the owners have been equally attentive to modern comforts, providing wifi internet access, satellite TV and air conditioning.
Meals are provided in a restaurant that is open to both guests and the public, and its stone-arched space offers intimacy while its terrace provides a place to relax over a drink. The menu plunders the farm’s own range of products, including its wine, jams and award-winning olive oil. Visitors can sample treats such as fresh ricotta in a drizzle of caramel sauce, or homemade strawberry ice cream that once tasted makes most other ice cream seem second best.
