The Lake District
…The beauty coming and the beauty gone, some happy tone of meditation, slipping in between the beauty coming and the beauty gone..."
William Wordsworth, Most Sweet It Is, 1835
It was the peaceful tranquility of the rural Lake District which enticed Wordsworth to settle here, to meditate and reflect on the natural beauty of the landscape. It was this Cumbrian countryside which came to inspire some of the greatest poetry ever written in the English language by Wordsworth, Ruskin and Coleridge. Artists, such as JMW Turner, were also drawn into its magic spell. Today, thousands of visitors flock to the Lakes each year for a breath of fresh air and the outdoor life for hill climbing, walking and cruising on the water. Literary pilgrims come here to visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, Ruskin’s Brantwood and Hill Top, former home of Beatrix Potter. Grasmere and Bowness are unsurprisingly popular places and you would be well advised to stay at the quieter southern corner of Lake Windermere.
