Room 206, tried and tested, is simply charming and homely with picture windows overlooking Windermere.
This historic country house hotel is ideal for a leisure break complete with a luxury Spa, 17 metre swimming pool (lake views), gym, Jacuzzi, steam room and children’s leisure area. Treat yourself to a pampering spa treatment such as an Aveda rejuvenating facial or therapeutic massage. Before dinner, sip a G&T alfresco on the terrace or in the bar, part of the original 17th century coaching inn. Dine in the elegant Lakeview restaurant (exquisite menu: Scallops, Cumbrian lamb, Dover sole, chocolate fondant), with accompanying Cole Porter era piano music creating a romantic mood. Alternatively, eat in the casual, contemporary Ruskin’s Brasserie. 10/10 for traditional breakfast dishes – creamy scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, kedgeree, Cumberland sausages.
Visitor attractions for all the family nearby include a Lake Windermere cruise to Ambleside, Hill Top, Holker Hall & Gardens, Lakeland Motor museum and the Haverthwaite steam railway. Leave the car at home and arrive by train at Oxenholme station, 20 minute taxi ride away. This is the perfect chill out zone for a few days away from it all to experience the art of relaxation. What more do you want for the perfect retreat!. I visited for just one night, enjoying delicious food, the spa, boat trip and fascinating tour of Holker Hall - but felt on return home I had been away for several days!. Restful and romantic, this is an oasis of sophistication and old fashioned hospitality with a genuine friendly welcome. I can’t wait to return.
