Cala Malo
Italians are famous for their style, and even in the tiniest fishing village you’ll find it, and the Cala Malo bar at Marzamemi may be little but it is oh so cool. If you’re feeling tired of looking at ruins, temples and churches and fancy a bit of nightlife, then Cala Malo is the answer.
The small but ever-so-stylish bar was set up in one of the old fishermen’s cottages by owner Santo Paternostro two years ago, and now pulls in discerning locals from across the area. It stays open until 4am during the summer months, or even longer as I was told by its smiling manager clad in Armani floral shirt, red trousers and scarlet Sicilian flat cap or coppola: “We stay open until people go home — every hour is a happy hour here.”
There’s music, beer, cocktails and a superb view over Marzamemi’s harbour. It’s a lively place, but Brits shouldn’t imagine the Costa Brava nor Upper Street on a Friday night, this is a far more chic and civilised experience. It’s a great place to sit back on the terrace at a glass-topped table festooned with gorgeous flowers, sip a prosecco and people watch. Enjoy.
