Au Temps des Cerises, Pont du Gard
"Your b&b is better than some of the five-star hotels I've stayed in," reads one of the comments in Ian & Kay Williamson's guest book. And the personal touches in this five-bedroom chambre d'hôte make it easy to see why. Niched among rolling fields, five minutes by car from the impressive Pont-du-Gard Roman aqueduct, you could be forgiven for thinking that this modern mas is much older as you crunch into the gravel drive. Guests are warmly greeted by the hosts and guided through the cool, cream marble hall to their en-suite room with private terrace – all are named after grape varieties in honour of the successful vineyard run by the Williamson's son near Montpellier. Grenache has a four-poster bed but all are decorated in terracotta or ochre tones; fluffy bathrobes and locally made smellies are sure to please. The saliva-inducing breakfast – fresh-fruit salad, homemade granola, just-cooked croissants – is served on the terrace, overlooking the heated pool and boules pitch. Is that a lion heading up from the river-beach at the bottom of the two-acre garden? No, it's just Buster, the resident Norwegian Forest cat. It's a fifteen-minute drive to medieval market town of Uzès for dinner.
