Cringletie House Hotel
There's an art to running a country house hotel; for me it's to make it seem as little like a hotel as possible and as much like you're really staying in someone's home - this is where the Cringletie succeeds. From the moment you leave the Edinburgh road and proceed up the long drive way to the house it doesn't shout hotel at you. Walk through the front door with its collection of wellies in the porch and you get the feeling this place is different. There's no check in desk on which to lean while someone deals with you, just a nice room in which your details are taken before they show you up to your room. There's art on the walls, the bedrooms are individually decorated and the attention to detail throughout the house bodes well for your stay.
The public rooms are lovely and look out across the well kept gardens and you're very quickly into the relaxing atmosphere. The food is fabulous and the menu is well thought out - Duo of Pork (Belly and Fillet) with Caramelised Apple Purée, is typical of the main courses on offer. The service is discreet and attentive. After dinner a glass of single malt in the lounge seems the appropriate way to end the evening. Nestling as it does in beautiful Border's countryside it feels an age away from the modern world and as with all the best country house hotels you could, as you sit sipping your whisky, think it might be yours.
