The Langham Hotel & Spa, Pasadena, California
This hotel used to be the Ritz Carlton and it's something of a Pasadena landmark having been built in 1907. Driving along South Oak Knoll Avenue as you approach the hotel says ‘old money’ and the Langham very definitely has that feel to it. Parts of the property feels like new additions, but its all been done tastefully and with care. The entrance and the lobby area set the tone for the whole hotel – as it should – with beautiful flowers and elegant furniture. The staff are well trained, attentive and could not be faulted.
The rooms are well appointed with everything in place, as you would expect at a luxury hotel. Bathrooms are well supplied and my room had a great view across the valley. The terrace restaurant is a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner and the weather was southern Californian perfect, so eating outside was the only choice. Downsides are few. The room service was expensive, although the food was faultless. Like many hotels the phone charges were extortionate, with claims at check out that, “it’s what the phone company charges,” sounding a little hollow. Overall the experience was good, not great, but the memory will not linger - unlike the great hotels.
