Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsisi)

The Grand Bazaar was the world’s biggest covered market when it was built over five centuries ago – and it still is today.

Narrow lanes lead off the main ‘street’ in a maze of glittering gold and burnished copper, of rich rugs and soft leather, a palace of trinkets and treasures where you need a sharp eye for a fake and the determination to haggle long and hard.

A trip to the bazaar is not necessarily a relaxing day out, but it is exhilarating and gives you a view into a bustling Istanbul that you don't see if you just visit the mosques and museums.
