Hot Doug’s is a sausagey temple with a queue for the altar. The hot dog is the unreconstructed Chicagoan snack of choice, and while there’s plenty of places you can get one with fluorescent relish and a soggy bun, Hot Doug’s is special.

 

That’s not only because they name their hot dogs after celebrities (the Keira Knightley chilli dog is so-called because it’s ‘mighty hot’) but because they’re committed to quality dogs. Choose from a menu that includes inventive daily specials, add duck-fat fries (weekends only) and hover until a table comes free.

 

It’s worth the wait for a greasy-chinned, wholly-satisfying experience that knocks spots off big chains and street-corner dogs alike.
