Green City Market, Chicago

This thriving, atmospheric market is handily placed for the visitor; it shares the lakeside park with Chicago’s impressive free zoo, so you can meet the producers and then meet the penguins. Standards are high, too, with stallholders quizzed on their agricultural practices before being offered a pitch. Self-caterers will obviously reap the biggest rewards from the Midwest produce stalls, but there’s plenty to eat on the hoof. Buying a perfect piece of fruit from the person who grew it has a certain appeal, though if you crave something less goody-two-shoes, pay a visit to the Floriole Bakery stand. Tender, crumbly shortbread is a speciality, and the quiches and galettes are rich and generously made.
