Avec, Mediterranean influenced cuisine in Chicago
 

Like a big sauna with delicious food, Avec is small, wood-panelled, and hot. As the more approachable sibling of Paul Kahan’s next-door restaurant Blackbird, Avec doesn’t take reservations. It simply loads eager customers onto communal tables, and it works because everyone’s here for a good time. Favourite dishes from a Med-influenced menu of small and large plates include deliciously gooey salt cod brandade and reliably excellent cured meat and cheese. It might be tempting to go for a bowl of the house’s homemade pasta, dressed with esoteric ingredients like truffled whitefish caviar, but plan to share. Keeping anything to yourself, including your conversation, goes contrary to the Avec spirit.
