Hopleaf Bar, moules frites in Chicago

Oooh, chips. On the one hand this is just a neighbourhood tavern in Andersonville, once the go-to district for Swedish immigrants. On the other, it’s a moule-frite gem to be ignored at the hungry person’s peril. Andersonville’s proudly independent spirit offers a few nearby diversions (a peek into the nearby cake shop, www.swedishbakery.com, perhaps) but it’s the combination of Belgian beers and buckets of mussels that most punters are after. You could go through to the restaurant at the back, but the bar is a perfectly relaxed setting for a frenzy of frite-dipping. If you’re lucky enough to look anywhere under 50 years of age, make sure you’re packing a passport: the Hopleaf ID everybody, and they mean business.
