Frontera Mexican Grill, Chicago
Prolific chef Rick Bayless is no stranger to American TV, and a constant in Chicago: his award-winning Mexican grill has been open since 1987. You’d think everyone would have been by now, but the customers are still flooding in, and since Frontera takes only limited reservations, they’re happy to wait. Thankfully there’s space in the lively bar and the tequila-skewed drinks list is long and varied. When you get a seat, expect strong, clear flavours in carefully-rendered dishes. The menu is written with lots of attention to detail, and everything sounds alluring, but think carefully before you order that beer-based cocktail. Yes, really.
