Arena di Verona
When it was built in the 1st century AD, the elliptical Roman amphitheatre seated 30,000 spectators for some pretty grisly entertainment. Today 20,000 music lovers thrill to spectacular summer productions of popular operas under the stars. Regular pop and jazz concerts are staged there, too.

Alternatively use the services of International Festivals Bureau (Tel: 08702 471 204, www.ifbarts.com) in the UK, who can also put together individual or group packages that include accommodation and tickets to the performances of your choice and will even make restaurant reservations – useful at the height of the opera season when everywhere is packed.
