The great open square curving around the Arena is lined with outdoor restaurants and seems to be the gathering place for half the world, especially in the summer opera season when cafés stay open until pre-dawn. Don’t be surprised if you see a sphinx at one end of the square. It’s just waiting to be hauled on stage for the next production of Aida. Storage space for sets is limited within the arena and the piazza is often used to park the overflow.
