On the site of the Roman Forum, the elegant market square is at the heart of the old city. A 14th-century fountain topped by a Roman statue, known as Madonna Verona, stands at its centre. Two tall towers overlook it, six ancient gods rise above the sandstone Palazzo Maffei, and the red-brick Chamber of Commerce dates back to 1301. The ‘market’ is more souvenir stalls than fruit and veg; people-watchers pack into portico-shaded cafés.
