The della Scala or Scaligeri family ruled Verona in the 13th and 14th centuries. Entered via the archway from Piazza dei Signori, three grandiously ornate tombs, encased in Gothic wrought iron and topped with statues, tell of their power and style. The tomb of Cangrande (Big Dog) is built into the wall of the church of the family chapel, Santa Maria Antica. Look for the numerous depictions of dogs and ladders, part of the family symbolism.
