Mas de Guilles, Lourmarin
If you want to get away from it all in the heart of the Provencal countryside, then look no further than the Mas de Guilles. On the outskirts of Lourmarin, one of the most beautiful villages in France, this renovated farm on a fifty-acre estate is a ‘relais du silence’ which means you’re guaranteed peace and quiet - unless you count the squirrels having a party in the trees outside my window, that is. The décor is ‘traditional Provencal’: flagstone floors, terracotta tones, dark-wood wardrobes. Apart from lying by the attractive pool while you read a good book (one of Peter Mayle’s maybe?), the best reason to come here is the food. Dinner began with a glass of champagne with a melon ball in it followed by a starter of foie gras accompanied by fig confit and toasted brioche. For main course I enjoyed Provencal lamb casserole, a rich stew, which came in a bowl covered with light puff pastry. Dessert was a more difficult choice: pear clafoutis with spiced ice-cream or a sorbet of Calissons d’Aix (melon-flavoured sweets). This was one of the best meals I’ve had in France and non-residents can eat here if they book in advance. Oh and don't forget to visit the Friday-morning market in Lourmarin.
