District Six is remembered as a vibrant place, its inhabitants closely linked with the city and the port. Originally established in 1867 as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants, in 1966 it was declared a ‘white’ area, homes were demolished and 60,000 people were forcibly removed to the distant and bleak Cape Flats.
This wonderful museum is filled with evocative photographs and so many memories of former residents of District Six, as well as some of the other areas where people were evicted in the name of separate development. The collection includes memorabilia such as street signs, books and audio-visual recordings, all cleverly and involvingly laid out, and there’s a bookshop and a friendly coffee shop. Don’t miss it.
