The oldest building in South Africa, the five-pointed star-shaped castle was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679. It houses a military museum, a collection of art and furniture reflecting cultural life in the Cape in the 17th to the 19th centuries, the castle forge, a banqueting room and a restaurant serving typical South African dishes.
The traditional Key Ceremony carried out by the Castle Guard at 10am and 12noon on weekdays depicts the unlocking of the castle and has been performed since the earliest days.
Guided tours at 11am, 12noon and 2pm.
Admission: Half price on Sundays except during school holidays.
