For a truly authentic African health spa experience, book yourself in for an evening at a Mangwanani Day Spa in Cape Town. There are actually seven of these inspirational day retreats dotted around South Africa and all train and employ staff from disadvantaged backgrounds who benefit from secure employment and a share in the profits. The ambience, food and treatments are of a high standard and the spa therapists give wonderfully therapeutic massages.
After being welcomed with a cooling drink, you change into bathrobe and slippers and are taken through the gardens to an outdoor pavilion for the first of your three treatments. These include a rose petal foot bath with a sugar and grape seed foot and leg scrub and massage; an African head and neck treatment with sesame seed oil and a full body massage with hot stone therapy. The spa pavilions and wooden walkways are lit only by moonlight and flickering candles and at least one treatment (the head and neck massage) is carried out in complete darkness and quiet (other than the sound of chirping crickets). After each treatment you are taken back to the dining room for a course of your dinner. The whole evening has a relaxed and comfortable feel, with memorable health spa treatments and unlimited food, wine and other refreshments.
