Discover grand architecture, 800 shops and the world's only granite cathedral

When the sun shines Aberdeen sparkles like a fairytale castle. The reason? Granite. The whole city is built of this glistening rock. Even the roads.

It may have a dour reputation but the Granite City's bold architecture creates one of Britain's most striking skylines. Grand boulevards lead to formal squares. An innovative museum is housed in the neo-gothic Marischal College, the world's largest granite building. And Aberdeen's 'Granite Mile' - Union Street - is home to over 800 shops, restaurants and bars.

The Old Town is more intimate. Wander round a medieval college chapel and a 15th-century cathedral - the world's only granite one of course!

And all that impressive stonework is softened by an award-winning array of parks and gardens. Aberdeen has won the prestigious Britain in Bloom competition 13 times. Spot flowerbeds everywhere - in the middle of roads, on roundabouts, in front of buildings. And don't miss The Winter Gardens - Europe's largest covered floral display.

Breathe that fresh sea air. Aberdeen has a beautiful sandy beach, one of Britain's busiest harbours and wonderful coast walks. Visit the Maritime Museum to see how seafaring, shipbuilding, fishing and offshore oil shaped the city.

Fancy a day trip? Aberdeen is the perfect base for tours of castles like Balmoral - the Scottish holiday retreat of the Queen and her family. The Castle Trail signposts you to 13 castles within 50 miles of Aberdeen.

Fancy a wee dram? Join the famous Malt Whisky Trail a few miles inland and visit seven of the best known and most picturesque traditional distilleries.
