The Queen Mother’s favourite hotel, a hop, skip and jump from Victoria station, has much to recommend it to lowlier guests, including a peaceful private garden, newly-refurbished bar and lounge, and bedrooms that run the gamut of styles. Run by the Goring family since 1910, it claims to be the first hotel in the world to have private bathrooms and central heating in every room. Now everyone’s got that, it’s the Linley-designed dining room that’s the USP. It’s run with courteous warmth and stars a trolley that trundles the day’s specials – perhaps roast gammon or fabulously fresh Dover sole. Updated rooms are sleek and reasonably contemporary, with the older ones equally in demand for their fussy charm and sparkling mirrored bathrooms. Wi-fi is not available in the public spaces, which could be a cause for consternation, but you don’t go to The Goring to be modern.
