The new residential sibling of Manchester’s classic Chinese restaurant, Yang Sing Oriental is a classy proposition even at entry level. The cheapest rooms boast space, luxury and wet rooms that’ll bring on serious bathroom envy; at the other end of the scale the Grand Emperor Suite is a duplex affair with four-poster bed. All guests get to enjoy the contrast of stylish Eastern decor in a chunky, brick-built Victorian shell, wi-fi, complimentary minibar and movies, and impeccable service deliberately pitched above the competition. Breakfast is a triumph of simple pleasures, including fresh, not tinned, grapefruit, and orange juice you squeeze yourself. The fusion version of the full English, featuring hoi sin sausage and soy and sesame tomatoes, is pretty good too. Although attempts at luxury occasionally go awry – the Clarins Eau Dynamisante bathroom products are great, but not every man wants to go to work smelling of ladies’ perfume – the important things are spot-on every time. Magnificent.
