Skyros holidays, Greece, Thailand, Cambodia, Isle of Wight, Cuba
Skyros has been running holistic holidays for 30 years this year and have grown in scope and popularity – centres now include Thailand, Cuba, Cambodia and the Isle of Wight, as well as the original site, Greece.
To many, Skyros was the first to embrace the concept of 'alternative' holidays, and the company prides itself on its the large number of repeat holidaymakers – most of whom are between the ages of 30 to 50.
Journalist Mariella Frostrup gave this advice to anyone contemplating the Skyros experience: "Let your hair down, take risks, expand horizons", she gushed in an Independent article.
All Skyros centres offer yoga as well as some of the following (see the website for which activities are offered): T'Ai Chi, meditation, and fun things like Cuban salsa, windsurfing, music and creative writing.
Most holidaymakers are attracted by the chance to embrace life anew: friendships are made quickly, new interests developed – the emphasis is firmly on letting go of preconceptions and inhibitions by giving things a go.
Visitors to Greece can opt to stay at Atsitsa Bay or Skyros Village Centre – Atsitsa attracts a more active, mucking-in crowd, and the majority of participants share twin beach huts, although there are also some single beach huts and twin/triple rooms in the villa. The Skyros Village Centre is home to the Life Coaching programme and well-known Writers' Lab – it nestles on a hillside at the edge of Skyros village.
Shared accommodation runs £50 - 110/night, and some single accomodation is available at a supplement.
