Gaia House, Devon
Tucked away in the verdant south Devon countryside, Gaia House is the only non-affiliated holistic retreat in Britain. All are welcome; while the retreats and courses are drawn from the wider Buddhist tradition, the philosophy and atmosphere is inclusive and undogmatic.
The house, a former convent, nestles among hills and woodland - a more conducive environment for taking time out is hard to imagine.
Guests can either come for an organised group retreat or personal retreat, though beginners should go for the former option. Themes include a Zen Retreat, Insight Meditation and Qi Gong, Insight Meditation and Yoga.
The programme is not for those seeking lie-ins and time to gossip with friends: commitment is needed as a typical day starts at 6am and finishes at 9.30pm. Most of this time is spent in silent meditation practice.
Holistic retreats are held in complete silence, and there is a 'no mobile phone' policy, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the quiet. Be prepared for basic but comfortable accommodation - while there are some single rooms, most are shared.
Helping out around Gaia House is encouraged: guests are requested to offer an hour a day of their time towards running the house; duties include gardening, washing up and cleaning. The vegetarian food is no-frills but tasty and wholesome, and meals are eaten communally in a dining room overlooking the lawn.
