The Eden Project
One of Cornwall’s and indeed the southwest’s biggest attractions, this spectacular conversion of a disused clay-pit into an array of climate-controlled domes has created what are the biggest greenhouse gardens in the world.
These futuristic ‘bio-domes’ are home to more than a million plants from 5,000 species representing the tropical and temperate zones of the planet. Inside them, thanks to the humidity, temperature and scents, you really feel as if you have stepped into the different parts of the world represented.
Eden is certainly as exciting as a garden attraction can be - and has quickly become Britain’s number one garden attraction. So don’t expect to have it all to yourself, whatever time of year you visit.
Nevertheless, the car park is huge, there are plenty of eating opportunities and there’s enough space to spread out. And Eden has a busy programme of events to attract visitors throughout the year: spring features two million bulbs flowering, summer has special music events, in autumn visitors can help with the massive bulb planting and winter sees the opening of their ice skating rink.
Eden is all the brainchild of garden entrepreneur Tim Smit, who became famous for his previous horticultural project - The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Heligan is a more traditional but nevertheless inspiring garden.
