Cruise Log – If it’s Tuesday, this must be Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas has finally put itself on the map. As cruise port for many years, it’s finally become a destination in its own right. Massive, sprawling hotels are under construction everywhere. As a scenic destination it fits the bill. The water is crystal clear, complete with beautiful rock formation scenery. There’s also snorkeling and scuba diving to make it a beach lovers paradise. Hollywood celebrities have discovered Cabo recently, and it’s not unlikely to find one of them hiding behind their sunglasses.
The other premier water sport in Cabo is blue marlin fishing. Private boat charters are abundant in the nearby marina and can range from a half-day to full day charter. It’s not unlikely to see the boats returning with their prized marlins.
While the destination provides water-based scenery, there’s not a lot of much else to do. The shopping is minimal, and the quality of the silver jewelry can be questionable in some cases. While Mexico was known for many years for its low-cost, quality silver goods, that’s not necessarily the case any more. With abundant world trade nowadays most of the items being sold originate in China.
Even the town has little to offer. One location for the “been there, done that” file is the Cabo Wabo Cantina owned by rocker Sammy Hagar. A wild, no-holds barred club filled with the buff and beautiful nightly. The gift shop sells his own brand of tequila; however, the prices are fairly comparable to home.
The only other must see in Cabo is El Arco. It’s a natural, arched rock formation perched at the edge of the sea where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Water taxis located at the marina will take you for about $10 a person out and around the rocks. Most taxis have glass bottom boats from which you can watch the sea life frolic below you. The rock formations are home to hundreds of sea lions, and they put on quite the show for the visitors. The driver should also take you to see “Lovers Beach”. It’s the only beach in the world bounded by two separate oceans. Regrettably, this makes for rough currents, and it’s not really suitable for swimming. But, you will come away with some pretty great pictures.
And if you time it right, you might even see a whale. If you are in Cabo between December and March, the whales are swimming down the California coast and on to warmer waters.
Cabo is a destination to kick back and relax with a margarita in hand. There’s not a lot to see or do, but it’s definitely relaxing.
