Top Tips for Paris
Getting Around
The Metro is brilliant and it runs until 2.15am on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets can be bought singly (€1.60) or more conveniently and cheaply in a book of 10 (a carnet) for €11.60 at Metro stations and some tobacconists. Travel is free for children under 4 and half price for ages 4 to 11. Metro tickets can also be used on the buses. Just remember to hang onto your ticket until you leave the metro system as some exits require that you re-insert your ticket into the mechanical gates to leave the station.
If you are going to be in Paris for longer and want to make multiple metro trips you should think about buying a Navigo Decouverte card, for which you pay 5 euro and which you then load with money every week or month for unlimited travel.
Beat the Queues
The Paris Museum Pass, valid for two, four, or six days (€32, €48, €64) gives priority admission to 60 museums and monuments. You can visit as many times as you like, without having to queue.
Passport to Paris
The Paris City Passport is a handy booklet with a guide to 33 sites that the tourist office thinks you’d like to see, has a map of the city and discount coupons offering 10-50 per cent off some admission fees, excursions and restaurants. It costs €5, is valid until the end of 2008 and can be used by more than one person.
La Colline des Musées
If you are interested in visiting the museums of the hill (i.e. Palais de Tokyo, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Musée du Quai Branly and Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine) it is possible to make a substantial saving with the "La Colline des Musées" leaflet. After you purchase a full-priced ticket at the first museum this leaflet will then entitle you to discounted entry to the next two museums you call at and free admission to the final museum you visit. Plus, you have 5 whole days to do the rounds.
Worth Knowing
Most national museums and monuments give free entry to under-18s and under-26s who are EU citizens. Many are free to everyone on the first Sunday of the month. The majority are closed on Monday or Tuesday and some public holidays. Many stay open late one day a week and the permanent collections of the Paris City museums are free.
