Berlin
Nobody can deny that Berlin has had a chequered past. It was the hub of Hitler’s Nazi regime and a battleground during the Cold War but since those dark days, things have certainly changed.
The German capital has transformed itself into a modern metropolis and rather than trying to forget the past, Berlin has embraced it. In all of its 12 districts, there are a raft of memorials and museums dedicated to the olden days and much more besides.
Its buzzing nightlife is renowned around the world and with one of the longest shopping streets in Europe – the Kurfürstendamm – Berlin is a haven for hedonists.
Covering an area nine times larger than Paris, Berlin is also one of the greenest cities in Europe and has scores of lush parks and wooded areas to enjoy, such as the Tiergarten and Botanical Gardens.
For what it’s worth, out of all the cities I’ve been to – and I’ve been to quite a few – Berlin is my favourite, hands down.
No wonder more tourists are choosing to visit than ever before.
