Potsdamer Platz
If it’s entertainment you’re after, look no further than Potsdamer Platz.
With a heady mix of museums, restaurants and shops, this famous complex is just as popular with the locals as it is with the tourists.
Before the Second World War, the original square was a crossroads and one of the busiest junctions in Europe but it was bombed several times and practically destroyed.
It went on to be carved up by the Berlin Wall and the junction for the American, British and Soviet sectors, thus rendering it a no-man’s land for everyone else.
After the fall of the wall in 1989, Potsdamer Platz became the biggest building site on the continent as Berliners fought to rebuild their landmark square.
A number of buildings soon shot up and today, the complex is also home to a casino, cinemas, theatres, the German Film Museum and the European headquarters of Sony, all centred around an impressive atrium with cathedral-like dimensions.
