Royal Maniace Hotel
This beautiful hotel has wonderful views across the Ionian Sea. Situated on the eastern side of the tiny Sicilian island of Ortigia it is an ideal place to stay to explore the island’s many historic sites such as the Duomo cathedral and Castello Maniace, visit the nearby Greek amphitheatre, or simply use as a base to visit the region’s Baroque towns and many beaches.
Situated on the quieter side of the island away from the hustle and bustle of its many shops, restaurants, bars, and zooming vespas, it is a place to relax and gaze at the fishermen out for a catch or wealthy locals posing in their yachts. Ortigia doesn’t have a beach and its residents hang out on the nearby rocks in the summer, take a 10-minute boat ride across the bay to a sandy beach, or jump in a car to head towards one of the many beaches nearby.
A wonderful seventeenth-century building, the hotel has been stylishly restored, and is flanked by two churches, the Baroque Church of San Martino and the Gothic Church of Jesus and Mary. As a four-star hotel, it’s not the cheapest place to stay on the island, and the price of a double room starts €160, an extra €10 is required for a room with a sea view, but guests may be able to take advantage of promotional offers.
