Villa Smeraldi
  Villa Smeraldi

This is a peaceful spot. Set above on of the most beautiful bays in Siracusa in southeast Sicily, the only sounds you are likely to hear are the rustling of leaves in a breeze and the crashing of the sea waves. Villa Smeraldi is two minutes’ walk from the rocky coast of the Plemmirio marine reserve. Rich in marine species, Plemmirio’s numerous coves and small beaches are ideal for snorkelling, diving, swimming and sunbathing.

The three-bedroom villa is situated up a quiet street, and surrounded by an acre of pretty gardens populated by olive, fig palm and pine trees, jasmine, oleander, hibiscus, capers, bougainvillea, geraniums and cacti. It’s a garden to laze in and read a book, or dine on the terrace equipped with a barbecue and wood-burning oven.

If you don’t want to stay in a hotel or want to avoid the hustle and bustle of town life and have a car to get around, then this villa provides the solution: it is a private and tranquil haven. The nearest sandy beaches are at Arenella (4 miles) and Fontane Bianche (9 miles). Villa Smeraldi is also conveniently located to explore the ancient Greek amphitheatre at Siracusa (7 miles), fortified island of Ortigia (7 miles), and Baroque towns of Noto (15 miles), Ragusa (36 miles) and Modica (36 miles). Mount Etna lies 45 miles north near the city of Catania and the nearest airport. Its owners, Maria Lucia and her sons Mario and Piero Fillioley, speak English and can supply information on where to go and what to do.

Inside, the villa sleeps six. It has a country style living room, a small kitchen with a microwave, oven, toaster and fridge; a sunny double room with private terrace and bathroom with shower; a double room with twin beds and bath/shower; and a double room with a bunk bed. It has air conditioning and heating, and is wheelchair accessible. There is room to park at least two cars. Prices for a one-week stay range from €800 to €1,300 depending on the time of year.
