It takes a stunning lack of imagination to dub Leeds’s shopping arcades the Knightsbridge of the north, yet for a city so overloaded with chi-chi boutiques, smart hotel options are surprisingly limited. That’s where new hotel group Pantin steps in; their first property, The Ellington, is handy for handbag-shopping and as sleekly luxurious as those customers might require. Public spaces, all loosely jazz-themed, include an atrium bar and much-lauded restaurant, serving French dishes like classic Lyonnaise quenelles of pike or confit de canard. Standard rooms are fine, but junior suites have more space in which to mix cocktails with the shaker provided, or brew breakfast coffee in your own machine: other luxe touches include plenty of Bvlgari toiletries, baby-soft robes and huge beds. There’s freshly-squeezed orange juice and excellent service at breakfast, which is taken in the decadent basement restaurant. No gym, but guests can have a Wii Fit system sent to their room – or, for something a little less energetic, a PlayStation.
