New Tayyabs
‘Indian Restaurant of the Year’ in 2008’s London Restaurant Awards but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is some new kid on the block. Mohammed Tayyab and his crew have been serving fantastic food for more than 30 years, at prices still stuck in the 70’s.
It’s an institution among London’s curry lovers, which means the “not as good as it was” comments fly around. That’s fine by me because it is as good as it was, and as cheap, and if that means if the queues die down a little, even better.
Apparently you can book. I’ve never even thought of that, and have only ever queued. I’ve never, ever just walked in (seriously, booking is recommended).
I don’t know any finer Pakistani Punjab food in London, or many places that will hit your wallet lighter. It’s grown from the original home-cooking cafe via a pub which has been extended, but despite that you have to BYO – for which there is no corkage charge.
In no particular order I could demolish the lamb chops, chicken tikka and mutton specials right now. The pakora is tip top – if you’ve never tried pakora now’s the time – and a variety of Karahi dishes, chicken, vegetables, king prawn are a delight. The breads, naan, pratha and a wholemeal roti, just add to the general enjoyment.
It’s easy to find – off Whitechapel Road. Look for the queues.
