Lahore Kebab House
The first time I visited I was shown a menu which appeared to offer little other than “Lamb Chops”. I asked what happened if I didn’t like Lamb Chops. “Go to another restaurant” came the reply.
Since then, I’ve learned to love the place, including the waiter’s rather dry sense of humour, leaving aside the time I approached from a different direction with a party of foreigners and got lost, but since Brick Lane’s nearby we were OK.
This is brilliant Pakistani cuisine, with Lamb Chops (and Lamb Chop Curry on a Friday) high on the list of must haves about town.
It’s grown substantially from humble beginnings but still packs ‘em in to the bigger surroundings. It’s still pretty cheap too with starters such as Mutton, Paneer and Chicken Tikkas all at £3 each. (The lamb chops are £7.50)
Vegetarian courses score high, try the Shahi Mutter Paneer, the Chana Masala, or more staple curries at about £7 each. I could nibble the lamb chops all night while awaiting the Batera, (roasted quail) but that would preclude the weekly specials which range from Nihari, chicken or lamb curry on the bone (Wednesday thru Sunday), Paya and Chicken Haleem at the weekends, and guess what on Fridays.
BYO or choose from mango, sweet or salty lassi. Service is brusque, fast and the walls are effectively bare, but that’s no big deal. The food is ace.
