Lake Como, Italy - drive round Europe’s most romantic shoreline

recommended by Simon Heptinstall

A winding road makes a complete waterside circuit of the most beautiful Italian lake, Como.

Car companies often launch new cars at luxury hotels around Lake Como. Even if the car is rubbish it's hard for journalists not to come back from the roadtest smiling.

Lake Como's shore is like a Riviera dropped into the middle of the Alps. You'll drive past beautiful people sipping wine at pavement cafes, exotic plants in Mediterranean-style gardens, fabulous villas teetering over the water, historic Romanesque churches, unbelievably cute villages of pastel paint and terracotta - and all within a ring of spectacular mountains.

You may even be overtaken by George Clooney driving to his new villa. Failing that, the highlights are the lovely lakeside town of Como and Bellagio, one of the prettiest, most romantic places in the world.

Where is it

Milan is about 30 miles south. The wiggly shoreline totals 100 miles - but passes right through busy lakeside towns and villages, so allow all day.

How to do it

Drive there in a long day from the UK or fly to Milan and hire a car. Spring and Autumn are best.
